California Contemporary
Encinitas, California
If California had a soul, it can be found in this Southern California Contemporary home. This 1960’s ranch style home turned meditation getaway includes a second story addition and panoramic ocean views of Cardiff-by-the-Sea. A gut renovation, using non-toxic materials and décor solutions throughout, was inspired by the clients’ love of yoga, the Seventies, and a beach vibe.
The homeowners have separate work and sleep schedules so two master bedroom suites were designed. The client requested a calming environment with soft, non glaring materials. Kim’s team incorporated calming elements from nature – the beach and ocean, the water and sand, for example, the custom walnut wood floors have a soft sandblasted finish.
Other design highlights include: an array of skylights over the stairwell for natural daylighting and stargazing, locally handmade kitchen backsplash tiles resembling tumbled beach glass, custom walnut cabinetry throughout, a Roche Bobois Mah Jong modular sectional designed in 1971, and three full bathrooms each with seashell inlaid countertops.
